One booth we never miss while at International Quilt Market in Houston is Serendipity Studio. This pattern designer, Kay Whitt, and her husband Keith (who also rocks!) are one of the first booths we rush to see! If it weren't for Kay and her amazing patterns, I would be scared to death to even attempt sewing a garment much less wearing one I made, but her clear instructions and easy-to-follow directions made me a darn good garment sewer! (See my Sophia Trenchcoat #1 and Sophia #2!) I knew Kay had a new book out and it was on my list to purchase for the shop!
Not only does this book have gorgeous photography, it also includes Kay's original sketches from her creative process. She's developed detailed sketches throughout the book to assist you every step of the way.
This hard cover and spiral bound pattern book includes Skirts, Tunics and Dresses, and Jackets sections. It has full size pattern pieces to accommodate seven sizes from XXS to XXL. It also has chapters on Custom Fitting, Tools of the Trade and Sewing Techniques (I learned a lot in this one!! Like how to use a ruffler attachment and inserting an invisible zipper. Turns out, I've been doing it wrong! Go figure!).
Kay gives you 3 basic patterns with 6 variations to complete a project all your own. She even gives tips on certain embellishments. Really, the most important thing I got from this book is that garment sewing doesn't have to be scary. With a few of the right tools, some awesome directions and a little confidence, you'll be creating your own fashions in no time!
This book is available in our online shop and, oh...did I mention that each copy is SIGNED by Kay!?! How cool is that!? Yep...I have connections...if you or someone you know has an interest in garment sewing or design, this is a great book to get them, or you, started!
